Browser-based image editor Photopea has released the 5.2 update. This free image editor is often referred to as a “Photoshop clone,” and it really does a pretty good job. But now it gets even better, adding color space support, CMYK mode, noise reduction, and more new options.

Photopea adds colorspace detection

First of all, Photopea can now detect a color space inside a file (PSD, JPG, PNG, and more) and it renders it correctly. “That space is maintained during the editing, and it is saved with an image (PSD, or embedded in JPG, PNG, …),” Photopea’s blog reads. “You can also create a new document in a non-sRGB color space.” Also, there’s now CMYK mode, which you’ll find useful for printing.

Photopea noise reduction

Next, there’s noise reduction. Go to Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise and adjust sliders to remove noise and preserve details. Photopea writes that it works fast even with large photos, and I can confirm. I tested it with a few photos, both in .NEF and .jpeg format, and it performed fast and well.

Text layer improvements

Photopea has also added new text parameters. You can add various styles to the same text layer, and you can play with the feature here. You can now also stroke any vector shape with the Brush tool, draw vector arrows with the Line tool, and match colors between two images. Last but not least, Photopea fixed many bugs in the latest update.

Conclusion

I’ve probably already mentioned that I use Photopea for edits on the go. I use it when working from someone else’s computer or even from my laptop, as I only use Adobe’s editors on my desktop. It’s a pretty good editor, especially for my needs. But it could be a good solution even for more complex edits. If you’d like to try it out, you’ll find some tutorials here, and you can join Reddit community, too.
