The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has treated us with a teaser of a celestial spectacle – its very first images of Saturn. They’re still just raw, black-and-white files, but they look impressive nevertheless, and some of them kinda ghostly beautiful.

the JWST has observed the ringed planet using its state-of-the-art Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument and various different filters. A few dozen of these early raw images are available on an unofficial JWST Feed website, JWST Feed. It contains a super-extensive database with every single piece of data from the telescope, updating live every few minutes.

Let me start by sharing my favorite photo from the batch:

Like this one, all the others are completely unprocessed. That means the cosmic noise hasn’t been scrubbed away and the images haven’t been colorized yet. Some of them look unimpressive, like giant white blobs… But the others, even in this raw form, are absolutely gorgeous. Here’s a small selection I made to show you JWST’s Saturn observations so far. You can check out more here, and of course – stay tuned for the colorized ones. I’m sure they’ll take our breath away!
